As is with all the other countries on that list. It depends on what you are buying. When you as an expat go to any of those countries to live will find that the stuff you are used to where you used to live is going to cost as much or more. If you live like a native in any of those countries you will find that the COL will be much lower.

Ecuador is a bargain. I was there with my ex wife in 2009. We had a $75 a day budget for the two of us combined, and were able to travel on that, bought lots of souvenirs, and hired a guide to take us into the jungle. It is also convenient that the currency is the US$.

How strict are they with the currency there? I have a bunch of slightly damaged dollar bills that are treated as if they were plague-infested, nobody will accept or exchange them

Maybe for someone earning USD Ecuador is still cheap. For someone from Peru or Colombia it became fairly expensive in the past years. Ecuadorians are flocking these countries to buy everything cheaper. It's because Colombia and Peru can devaluate, Ecuador couldn't.

The trick is to use more and more local products. I spent 16 months in Arequipa, Peru and found it very inexpensive compared to where I live in the USA. Like you point out, american and European products are even more expensive than they would be in the USA.

Some prices in a popular supermarket of my city in Brazil.

Consider that 1 BRL = 0.30 USD

Nestlé Nescau Chocolate 1kg = 3.05 USD
Guaraná soft drink 2l = 1.21 USD
Mayo 550g = 1.30 USD
Coffee 200g = 3.35 USD
Beer 1l = 1.50 USD
Colonial cheese 1kg = 5.94 USD

Interesting how in Brazil there are many regional brands… Most brands in this folder I’ve never seen in Sao Paulo.
In Brazil food and house/rent and services are cheaper but cars, electronics and cloths are more expensive.

There is a strong regionalism in Brazil, people like to buy things produced in the cities and states where they live.

Not sure how cheap Colombia is relative to the rest of LatAm. I think it depends a lot on what you're purchasing.
