I retired in Uruguay but am now contemplating returning to the US. I didn't sign up for Part B Medicare at 65 because I saw no purpose in paying over $100 per month for insurance I could not use here. I did receive a Part A enrollment card from Medicare in the mail.
I am trying to ascertain whether I will have to pay any penalties for coverage when I return and also if I have to wait until Jan 1 to sign up. What would I do for insurance if I return in, say, September? This would best be answered by an expat who has personal knowledge of this situation. Thanks!

You might get more replies if you post this in the General U.S. Forum rather the Americas forum.

The U.S. embassy in Portugal where I live has a section devoted to SS and related stuff. In my case I would take my questions there first as they have been helpful in the past.

Does the embassy in Uruguay have such a section? Look into it.

But Chile is too expensive. I've heard Peru, Uruguay and Ecuador seem to be the places to retire to for American expats.

Yes, the Embassy in Montevideo has that same special section. I will go there to make inquiries.
