Alejandro Echeagaray, the CEO for the BMW Latin America division, was recently in the DR to take part of the Road Show event. He was interviewed by Diario Libre and among the things he said was:
- The DR is among the top 5 Latin American countries where BMW has the most sales of new vehicles (out of 24 countries in the region).
- The most selling new BMW in the DR is the X5, then X7, X3 and X1 in that order.
- He also said "BMW is very happy with the Dominican results."
If you want to get an idea of what these vehicles sell for in the DR, on average new vehicle prices are around 30% more than the same in the USA. The reason prices are higher is a combination of higher transportation costs since the DR is on an island that produces the grand total of 0 cars of any type, import duties which must be paid entirely before anything leaves the port, an additional luxury sales tax applied to everything the government considers is a luxury item and a few other things. The costs of getting a license plate and registration are included into the price and once a license plate is issued to a vehicle, it stays with that car until it goes to the junk yard and regardless how many times it's sold from the moment bought new at the dealership to the end of its life.
