The government recently adopted a newer more up-to-date methodology for measuring poverty. This new methodology increases the monetary thresholds. The results were published today in all the major newspapers (Listín Diario, Hoy, El Caribe, etc). They are as follow.

Total Poor: 2,943,555
Total Extreme Poverty (amount included in the total poor): 401,283

Ozama Region (Greater Santo Domingo): 34.0%
South Region (everything south of the Central Mountains and west of Santo Domingo): 27.6%
East Region (everything east of Santo Domingo including tourists areas such as Punta Cana): 24.5%
North or Cibao Region: 21.3%

- By 2022 some 290,000 Dominicans left poverty.

- More than 456,000 people left poverty due to government transfers.

- Nominal income levels are now higher tha pre-Covid, which means the labor market has surpassed the effects of the Covid pandemic.

Poverty by region. Includes the extreme poverty figures.

Extreme poverty by region.

Income inequality has been going down (the country is becoming more equal, as time goes on the economy is not just benefiting the rich) at the national and urban levels. However, it's worrysome that from 2021 to 2022, rural areas saw an increase in inequality. Hopefully this is temporary and the downward spiral picks up again. With things like a massive illegal immigration from Haiti, the last thing desirable is for poverty and inequality to increase.

Income inequality from 2021 to 2022 has been going down in all the regions. Over 80% of the population lives in towns and cities, this is why on a national and regional levels the occurence at the ruraal level doesn't have much of an impact. Before the 1970's the majority of the population was rural.
