Remember stories of how the Somoza family ruled Nicaragua as their personal fiefdom for decades, looting the country and repressing the people? Looks like the Ortegas are doing the same thing. https://www.ncregister.com/cna/dicta...angelical-ngos
I was just saying this to some one the other day. Really sad Nicaragua had a war to get rid of one dictator to fall in the hands of another. Ortega is a real POS.
The only positive side is that at least the Ortega's are Nicaraguans. Nothing is more embarrasing than having a country fall and become the personal fiefdom to a person that is not even from there. Nicaragua doesn't need to look at other countries as examples, they have experience with this. He wasn't even the son of a Nicaraguan immigrant! No relations to Nicaragua whatsoever!

I've been to Nicaragua several times, but not in recent decades. It has gone way downhill since 2018 when Ortega & his wife decided to get rid of any and all opposition in all levels of government & public offices. Even schools and school boards. This resulted in the biggest wave of emigration from Nicaragua in recent history. The first to flee were many with the resources to leave. It has expanded to include people with little hope of improving their situation in Nicaragua. It is almost like a smaller scale replica of the Venezuelan exodus in the past 8 years or so. What a waste, because I always liked my visits to Nicaragua in the past, especially two smaller cities in the north (coffee growing region), Esteli and Jinotega.
If someone were a risk taker and wanted to buy real estate for pennies on the dollar, it can be had in most parts of Nicaragua. With all the people leaving, there aren't enough buyers left behind and some of the properties are just abandoned or taken over by squatters when the owners leave.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out that Ortega has the support of American big business. I read recently that the country is a major beef exporter. In addition to being a big coffee exporter. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/in...igh-human-cost
Has tourism slowed down in Nicaragua? In spite of all the problems, I'd still like to go.
