I've been here for 1 year too! It is an amazing place. Ocean and mountains all in one area!! Tons of activities if you take advantage of them!

Eh, depends on what you're looking for. Best access to awesome outdoor recreation and wildlands in the northwest? Yah definitely. It's the greatest northwest city for people who don't really like cities. Trying to be objective, my vote probably goes to Vancouver BC, which is also in a beautiful location with great outdoor rec. but is a world-class cosmopolitan city as well. Moreso even than Seattle. Greenies love the local culture in Portland, and even the small cities in the mountains of western Montana deserve some attention.

All that said though, I moved to the woods for a reason...

Vancouver was too crowded and had too many people and buildings. It wouldn't even rank in my top 10.

Oh don't get me wrong, I wouldn't live there. But I wouldn't live in Anchorage either, for exactly the same reasons.

Yes Anchorage is a great place for many of the reasons already mentioned. But it also has a few downsides which would prevent me from calling it "the greatest city in the northwest." Specifically, the lack of Culinary Diversity and the over abundance of dangerous, sucky drivers are high on my list.

Doesn't that describe pretty much any city? How do you have a city without a bunch of people and buildings?

If we are talking major cities, my vote is for Vancouver or Portland.

I'm not a fan of Anchorage, it has Costco and some malls, but there is nothing special about it. Seward, Homer, Ketchikan, Valdez, Juneau are much nicer, but they aren't major cities. Anchorage has big city problems such as crime and traffic without city amenities or should I say without variety/great city amenities.

Anchorage is what it is but I am always awed by the mountains surrounding the city. It is located in a very scenic spot.
