I have been considering homeschooling my children. My youngest isn't due to start kindergarten until this fall. In some conversations with friends, I have heard that AK has a great program where they offer you some sort of stipend and even a computer to homeschool your children. Is that true? If so, what is the name of that program and where might I find information about it? I have Googled and not found much.

A lot of them include reimbursement of educational expenses up to a certain amount, and provide some resources such as computers (often leftovers from district upgrades). Haven't heard of any that flat-out pay you to homeschool.

There is also a large surplus of State PCs, printers, and components. Keyboards and mice, for example, cost $1. A 3Ghz P4 with 250GB drive and CRT monitor for under $100. All these PC will also include NICs, so you just need a router and you have a home-network. On the other hand, none of the State PCs were purchased for their superior graphics capability. So if you want a gaming PC, the State Surplus is not the place to find them. They were all designed to run Win98 (if it is REALLY old) and XP with Microsoft Office. That was the Statewide standard. Unless they are extremely old (at least a decade old or more) all State PCs are purchased from Dell.

These would be ideal for homeschooling and Internet access, and cost less than $100 per child.

I wasn't going to respond - but;

Should the reward of money or (inexpensive) computer equipment be the incentive to home school children?
