We're moving out of Alaska. Going to the Seattle area. I know I've seen threads about the cheapest way to move to the lower 48, but I can't seem to find them now. Driving ourselves in a U-Haul isn't an option. We've got a decent amount of stuff (living in a 3 bedroom) but not a ton. We'll try to get rid of what we can before we move. So what's the cheapest way to go? THANK YOU for any advice you've got!!

Take it to Northland Services in Anchorage and ship it on the barge. That's as cheap as it gets.

Cool, thanks for the tip. It looks like it goes on an open barge...how does one package their stuff safely for that kind of exposure? Any ideas? Is this much cheaper than getting a POD container that we pack ourselves? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Yep. Your stuff goes inside a connex. It all depends on how much you have. If it's only 3 or 4 pallets then you won't need the whole container. Call them ask. Very helpful people.

i would check out upack dot com. i used them when shipping here and they base it on the cubic feet you use if you use that option (they also have the entire containers you can rent as well). if you can minimalize it's fairly cheap. if not, it's still better to leave no stone unturned 8) additionally, we made arrangements because there was no place to have the truck brought to our home so we loaded everything in a uhaul and drove to the terminal. you just have to make sure to have handtrucks, blankets, etc. not recommended to ship liquids during winter months though... i forgot shampoo was a liquid! and it's a good idea to predesignate storage where you can protect/keep your things in case you can't get it immediately into your place. shopping around can save you hundreds just with that backup plan... just in case.
