You can check out homes for sale in Trulia (Trulia - Real Estate, Homes for Sale, Apartments for Rent, Local data). They usually have a street view option so you can see what the immediate surroundings are like, and looking at several homes in a small area can give you some feel for the neighborhood. Not the same as being there, of course.

One of the things I noticed (in the area I'm looking at) is that very few streets have side walks. That's a little surprising in an area with a lot of kids.

Does the safest have to be the most expensive? What about safe areas with mid-priced homes? The issue I'm running into is not physically being there and being able to see the nuances of the neighborhoods.

Woke up this morning and it's only 60! The a/c finally kicked off!
Certainly you are not looking to buy a house from afar. Move into a rental & then start searching. It took us 4 years of renting (with 3 pets too) before we finally found a decent home in a safe neighborhood in our price range.

There are many safe enclaves within the city that are affordable. However, it takes getting to know the town & that takes being there.

Best of luck, JasonAndJulie on your move to Alaska!

Thanks for the input. Houston has almost zero sidewalks too, strange. Does the lack of sidewalks there have to do with the snow? No excuses for Houston...

Just guessing here, but since sidewalks cost money to put in. Developers really fight that expense and governments got smart and make the developer put them in when they put in new developments. Around here the state/city/county has to maintain them once they are in.

And I can tell you that the homeowners part of maintaining them is 'fun' too. You get to pressure clean them a couple of times a year and it adds to the edging experience when doing the lawn... I imagine snow showveling to be a chore for those winter states.

We had sidewalks in Dallas and loved them. It was great for walking dogs (not letting them poop in people's yards!!) and teaching kids to ride bikes.
I sure do miss them since moving here, but you're right...that strip of grass between the sidewalk and the curb was a pita!
