I am hoping we drive up around June/July timeframe we are supposed to be there by the end of September but want to drive in the summer to enjoy it and be safer on the roads.

We just PCS'd here from Ft Stewart, GA and we drove. For travel tips, I'd say plan on driving slower than you usually would on the Alaska highway. You will run into rough pavement and potholes, and large animals! We tried to keep to between 250 and 300 miles a day when we got onto the Alaska highway. Being military we are used to driving long distances and so that looked like we were going pitifully slow to me, but when it actually came down to it I was awfully glad to see our destination at the end of those shorter driving days.
Check your car out really well before leaving goes without saying, check your spare too!
Since we traveled in winter, there were a lot of things closed for the season. Overall we enjoyed the trip though. The hotels along the way are not like hotels in the states, nor the restaurants for that matter. But if you are flexible I think you will enjoy it. I am very type-A about some things, and I loved it.
For sure get a Milepost, and have an idea where your stops will be for gas. But don't coast into the stops on fumes or anything, because if the gas station happens to be closed, you may be screwed if the next is not for many miles. A lot of people carry some extra gas I don't know if that is necessary in the summer but it couldn't hurt if you have a place for it in your vehicle.
I have heard JBER has plentiful housing. There is a facebook page that has a lot of photos of the inside of housing there- Moving House for the Military Spouse is the name of it.
The border crossings went fairly smooth for us, but I have heard they can take several hours if they choose to inspect your stuff. Your family will need DOD passports- they're free but they take a while to come back. They do not need orders to start the process, so I would start working on that right away if you don't already have them. The military member does not need one, but will need his military ID and birth certificate with him at the border crossing. Our neighbor was delayed significantly at the border because he didn't know he needed a birth certificate with him.
If I think of anything else I'll try to add. I hope you enjoy the trip!

Great that you are going that time of year! What luck. You'll have a lot of daylight. Top off your gas when you can, keep an eye on the Milepost & have a great drive up.

The good thing about being Militaryis that they don't hastle you at the border over do you have enough money to get through Canada issues. They flat out told us it didn't concern them since they knew the Military would make sure we got to where we were going, which was Elmendorf. Enjoy the trip and Alaska.
