Hi all. Okay we just returned from visiting. (DH's company needed my ok before relocating). I said no to Kenai yes to Anchorage. So now we wait and see. Anyway, I've looked at so many houses online. I'm wondering why most don't have woodstoves? I haven't seen many pellet or wood stoves. Does anyone know why this is? What is the most common heat source? Thanks.

Cause natural gas in Anchorage is a pretty cheap heating source. A lot less work then a woodstove.

My parents in Portland have (and love) a pellet stove. They haven't caught on here because of the cost of getting pellets to Alaska. They want twice as much here for pellets as what my parents pay for them. There's been talks of establishing a plant in Fairbanks for making pellets but nothing has come of it.
The problem of a woodstove in Anchorage is where are you going to get wood. Yes you see plenty of trees, but they are on federal, state or private land. So it's not like you can walk out and start dropping trees.
We live in the Valley and average about $150 a month for natural gas, which we use for heating, hot water, cooking, and dryer.

We have a lot of completely useless fireplaces though. Best bet would be to scrap that and install a wood stove for back up heat.

With a fireplace you can get natural gas inserts that are designed to be used as a heat source, (and for ambiance). They are really expensive as you have to also install new flue pipe, etc. There may never be a pay back point. It will be a positive when you sell the house. It will be nice to have when the power goes out, that is assuming you get one that does not require electricity to operate all the time.

Getting enough firewood to heat with is a chore. We use about three cords a year at our cabin in Willow and it is not always easy finding enough wood to cut.

I agree that getting inserts for fire places that burn wood are nice. They are a little expensive to buy and have installed also. They don't require electricity to work well. Although the ones with blowers do heat more efficiently.

Doesn't Fairbanks have pretty poor air quality due to all the wood stoves, etc.? I thought I read that earlier this year...

Awesome, thanks for the update!!! Are their products just available in Fairbanks, or can you get them in SouthCentral?

I don't know about SC, but they were available at Home Depot and Lowes in Fairbanks this past winter. They're also available for pickup and I believe they will deliver if you buy enough. Their pellets appeared to be of better quality than the stuff Sam's and Walmart was selling....a lot less ash was generated using them.
