The lights in my place flickered a few times but didn't go out. Lots of traffic lights were out in downtown this morning.

So has the wind died down?

I recall the first time I flew into Anchorage and they said the gusts were 40 mph and our plane was rocking enough that everyone cheered when the pilot touched down. Also remember walking around at 1-2 a.m. and being blown across the parking lot--well, not really, but those gusts were strong.

While not real often, Anchorage can get some rather strong winds around the airport. I was listening to the approach frequency when the controller told a passenger flight to turn and intercept the glideslope. The pilots response was they were in turbulance so extreme they could not read their instruments to make the turn. The pilot requested to continue out across the inlet to calmer air before making the turn.

Holy cow!

Windy landings are unnerving. Flew into Flagstaff, Arizona last April (they are known for high winds up there in Spring) and I was soooo glad I hadn't eaten anything that day.

We landed a couple days earlier with the typical up down side to side at ANC. AA pilots are sharp and the advanced avionics help them I do hear. We don't fly out until next week so hopefully things are a little better. Adventurous? Why not?

Like flying into Dallas in the summer. The heat thermals make for an interesting final approach and landing. My wife won't take a connecting flight into Dallas in the daytime anymore.

I call it the upchuck express flight. Definitely an e-ticket ride that I don't ever want to go on.

AADAD - In Miami we have cars with FBSS (Front, Back, and Side to Side) hydraulic shocks. You all didn't tell me the planes had that feature when flying into Ancorage. I thought it was just the bush planes.

I was in Barrow when that happened. A friend of mine had recently left Barrow for Anchorage and called me so I could hear the wind screaming through her windows.
