If you have not been and you have any appreciation for airplanes and members of the armed forces, this is not to be missed; 2014 Arctic Thunder Air Show | Alaska Air Show Association

I have seen this twice in the past and it is spectacular. Hope for good weather, bring a camera and the youngsters!

If I am back in Anchorage, I will go with the kids to this. Funny, in that my wife starts her new job on JBER July 28th... The day AFTER the show ends.

After the last arctic thunder the lines to get in the gate were so long that I had to pee in a bottle for the first time in my life. I now live walking distance to base so if the weather is REALLY nice I will for sure go and just walk in.

I surely hope they've retooled the parking/entry/exit situation, that was a nightmare last year. Worth it to get into though!

Taking advantage of the shuttle service is far more convenient, in my experience.

I remember in year's past there being a shuttle, but I don't see it mentioned this year:

"Transportation: Public transport will not be available. Personal vehicles are allowed entry through general public access areas at the Richardson and Boniface gates. Motor homes and RVs are not permitted. "

Oh boooo! Well, it was convenient. That is a shame the service has been discontinued.

Is there a nice place to watch it from that isn't on base? I enjoy watching the planes do their thing but I'm not fond of traffic/being so close to the noise of the planes

No, the bulk of the show demonstrations are centered over the runway, much too far to see anything from a peripheral vantage point. However, I have been on the Moose Run golf course during prior shows while playing golf, and the demo team(Blue Angels) at the time would run out and recover/make their turns over the course during the show, I considered it a very nice bonus while playing a round.
