What type of employment are you looking for? That's probably the biggest factor.
Anchorage, for the most part, is a city on the edge of Alaska. So you can quickly be in the woods, but it's not in the woods. If you are looking for a more rural experience, consider Eagle River, Chugiak, the MatSu Valley or the Kenai Peninsula.

Eagle River and Chugiak you can live/play in and work in Anchorage without a long commute. Some live in Wasilla/Palmer and work in Anchorage so its possible, I moved up here to NOT spend an hour commuting to/from work each way so that isn't an option for us.

Also, not that Anchorage should be your "goal" to work in per se - it does happen to be where a lot of jobs are seeing as it is the largest city in Alaska. Jobs in healthcare and government (and military) seem to be the top employers. Oil and Gas always seem to be hiring people with degrees in engineering, geology, and some other specialties. There is also seasonal work around too. Living "in the woods" here it is called "the bush".

What are your skill sets? College degree? Career goals?

Besides the areas AKstafford mentioned, you have Juneau which is the states capital, so if government work is an option or goal - there are leads to explore there too. Originally, I thought we were going to end up in Juneau, but turns out that job didn't happen and one in Anchorage did pan out.

If you don't mind the lousy pay the service companies at the airport are usually hiring. It is a 24 hour airport so you can work nights and look for a better job during the day

Anchorage is a city. A crappy one. It's not anything near to "simple life living."

And the last thing needed there is more wistful lonely desperate single dudes.
