I know the feeling. Older, disabled and wanting to live out in the middle of nowhere. Some people are totally clueless about what it's like to live in Alaska. Especially out in the middle of nowhere. I grew up in rural Alaska. I've lived here almost my entire life. My advice to these dreamers is stay where you're at and make do with whatever meager resources you have. Because it will be a lot more difficult and a lot more expensive up here.

Kavik? Wow, that's hard core. Sorry, there's only room for one all season inhabitant, and that position is taken.

Dang! if I were in my 20s, I'd take you up on that. I hope you find someone decent to do that work. I'm in my late 50s now and struggling to finish the work on this house. This is going to be the last house I remodel: my back isn't happy with me anymore. ):

Rest assured: one of these summers, I going to come visit. I'll bring lottsa money and leave before it snows. LOL!

To those who want to live remotely: there are still rural places that zoning has forgotten. If you don't have much money, you need to live were there are safety nets, like you can grow some of your food and/or get seasonal work, like maintaining an RV park. If you live somewhere like the Ozarks and need some major surgery, you can drive to the nearest big city. You don't have to take an expensive flight to Seattle.

LOL. I can't find any locals who are worth a crap to fix a few things around the place. The guys that normally do interior remodeling all took off for greener pastures in the -48.

Once the sense of adventure wears off, it takes a special type of person to thrive in Alaska, I think. I know that I couldn't hack the winters at this point, but I could have when I was younger. If you're not into that, there's good money to be made with the housing boom in various places, like here. Downtown Des Moines is taking off and there's tons of construction and work for those in the trades, after a long dry spell.

But it's sometimes a hard sell: there's no mountains or large game. The guys make their money and go play elsewhere. We will soon have nonstop airline service several times a week to Los Vegas.

Good luck! Maybe the right person will turn up soon, a win-win for both of you!

Yeah the winters are rough, you gotta be able to deal with them,I spent about 35 yrs in Anchorage Alaska and I've seen many people move just because of them,in Anchorage it's not just the cold,in some parts of Anchorage it's kinda humid even during the winter so it effects some people's bodies like some elderly with arthritis.

Not trying to be negative,I sure hope that you guy's realize your dreams, but there are more variables than people usually consider, the summers are great though,if you are into fishing and camping the whole state kinda becomes a giant get together all summer.

The Alaska economy is struggling. But yet prices are still high. I would strongly suggest you line up a job before you move. (Yes, I know this thread is 2 years old, but I am putting this out as a general warning).
