Does anyone know the paperwork needed to look at my birth certificate from before I was adopted in 1983?

You should be able to request it: Birth Certificates

Hey, I skimmed through your other post but may have missed the answer. If you were not not born here, I am not sure Alaska would have your original birth certificate. I am adopted but I was born and adopted in the same state so I am not sure what happens to records if adoptions occur in a different state from where you were born. In my case, my original birth certificate is sealed (thanks Virginia) and all I have access to is the amended one that came with my adoption. Good luck with your search! I found my birth mother a couple of years ago.

My wife was adopted in a different state (AK) than her birth state (NC). The new birth certificate was issued in the same state as the original (NC).

I would request that Vital Statistics in AK release any and all records relating to her adoption. That would give her the full record and birth certificate if it is available. Since we seem to be an open record state, even if it didn't have her original birth cert, it should contain identifying info on all parties involved. That is what I did when I started my search in VA but mine came with a lot of cut out places.

She already has every scrap of paper that the courts generated including her original birth certificate. Her birth mother's parental rights were terminated by the courts when she was a teenager and she was then adopted by her aunt and uncle. There's not much of that history she cares to rehash.
