I'll be flying into anchorage the first or second week of September, and looking for a hotel for base of operations until I locate housing. Would like recommendations for something fairly nice, very safe (will have kids with me). But don't want to break the bank unnecessarily, either.

Plans won't be solidified for a few more weeks, but I want to start looking at things. Thanks.

What do consider as "breaking the bank?" Hotels aren't cheap in Anchorage.

You want a place that you can cook as well? A week stay is pretty expensive when you start eating out every meal. We like comfort inn and suites by the airport. There are others and I can't remember the one we stay at with a small kitchen.

Don't laugh, but the sockeye inn isn't that bad. Strange, but affordable and quirky.

I'd like to stay well under $200/night, but I will want a suite setup with the kids. Kitchenette would be nice, but I can make do with a cooler and a slow cooker, if need be, especially if they offer the buffet or continental breakfast.

Comfort Inn looks pretty good, the sockeye certainly is affordable, and I will look at it further. Thank you for the suggestions.

The sockeye has shared bathrooms which is the quirk. They were super clean when we stayed and I felt safe. Just take shower shoes if you do the sockeye inn.

The kitchen was also shared.
I don't think you will have any problem finding a safe hotel and a rental car together for less than your budget. September isn't quite winter prices, but definitely not summer prices.

I'm a recently new convert to Airbnb. Especially if thinking of moving to a place, you get a better "feel" of an area staying in an actual neighborhood than a hotel. The whole house/apartment to yourself is nice too. A lot of times they can be cheaper than hotels too. I've stayed in some seriously nice airbnbs in Alaska for much less than $200 a night. I'm sure there's lots of airbnbs in anchorage.

For a week stay or more I'd choose Airbnb over a hotel every time .

Aspen Suites are like $150 per night summer rate, probably less by September, and have kitchenettes. Very clean and quiet, good neighborhood, pretty convenient location. I don't know if they have separate bedrooms, though.

I think that is the other place we stay at sometimes. Or homeward suites. It's been awhile since we've stayed in the other place I can't think of.
