The whole issue has an interesting history. From what I read the many older native residents were against the name change...some didn't even know about the proposal. They grew up referring to the place as Barrow, even though the Inupiaq name was either Utqiagvik or Ukpeagvik. OK, hairsplitters, English might be spoken there now, but so is Inupiaq.
Pronunciation is easy if you speak Inupiaq.
