Hi,

We are contemplating a move to Anchorage. We have a 4th grader who is currently in a Montessori program. My husband will be working downtown. We're hoping to buy in a politically liberal neighborhood with some decent schools. Montessori would be great, but we're open to any good school.

Thank you!

If you can afford to live there, Inlet View is downtown, it's a very good school.

Denali Montessori is known in ASD as a great school & is in a beautiful downtown neighborhood.

Yeah, just come up before the election and drive around looking for the Obama and Begich yard posters. There are a few out there, if they haven't been torn down yet!

There were approximately 1200 people at the Obama rally in Anchorage, as well as the same approximate number at both of the anti-Palin rallies, if you are counting rally signs.

I have scanned many pictures of the anti-Palin rally taking heart that there are politically liberal women in Anchorage! (I did wonder why you all were wearing coats.) But hey, what about the schools?!

I live in SW Anchorage (an area down by Dimond HS, called Sand Lake). Great MS and HS, didn't have kids in grade school when we got here.

As a teacher, I still suggest Denali Montessori. If you live in the neighborhood, your child can automatically get in. Otherwise, it is a lottery system to get in & a commute from anywhere in town.

Denali Montessori School » About Denali Montessori

There are many nice neighborhoods & schools in Anchorage. What sort of neighborhood, other than liberal, would interest you? Close to hiking/ski trails? Outside the city in Eagle River? Ravenwood Elementary School in Eagle River is on of the best in ASD with very high standards & very high test scores as a bonus.

Rogers Park Elementary & neighborhood are highly spoken of also.

There are links to all ASD schools on the district website at asdk12.org

There are also links to test scores per school, demographics, etc.

Thanks for the input so far. We just got back from Anchorage and got a little familar with the neighborhoods. I toured Denali Montessori and thought it looked good. The private Montessori has only 8 kids in their grade 4-6 class and just lost their teacher. What about the Turnigan (sp?) elementary school or the Sand Lake school? Both areas were interesting. Being by the coastal trail would allow my husband to bike into work and Kinkaid Park looked marvelous! Thank you again.
