[quote=Harpoonhawk69;6448845]Thanks AKNana for your top tips and kind words. I have to say that timing is the crucial factor, right place right time - rather than having anything to do with being the best....but thanks anyway

AWWW, you are too modest!

Oh right....I'll check online about them. Although I've heard that Spenard is a bit dodgy?? Thanks for the tip though JavaPhil

Amongst others...not too many bases left in Scotland but my understanding is that Alaska has a dry cold (like Arizona has a dry heat). Were you living near Lossie?

The Alaska Club in mid town is located next to the biggest bookstore in Anchorage, Title Wave, and the boys like to go in there, too.

Mid town vs down town....what's the difference?? I thought mid town was downtown....Anchorage is not that big, is it? For some reason I''m not a big fan of using the on base facilities....guess it's the thought of getting off the base and socialising at a spin class etc. Again AKNana, I'll take your advice. I'm over in Anchorage over New Year checking out a few places.

Population wise, no, Anchorage is not that big, with a population of around 280,000. But the geographic area is huge, extending from north of girdwood to the south, to Chugiak to the north east, approximately 1700 square miles. It is a combined city/county. Downtown and midtown are close to each other, but not the same area. As you will discover on your trip up here, downtown is limited to an area about 6 blocks wide and a mile or so long. Here you will find hotels, restaurants, bars, government services, financial, and a few apartments/condos.South of downtown is mostly residential/parks and some services, then you come to midtown, with spread out big box stores, malls, car dealers, etc. The south of that is the hillside and south Anchorage area, which is primarily residential and a few more malls. This is a general description, there is a little bit of everything everywhere!

I think I'll have to use a company to help find me a place...oh yeah, I think I know who you are referring to (AKNana)...infact, I may even be replacing him if it's who I think it is?
