If you are wearing it for a visit and just want to stay warm rolling around town. If you are not going to be out in the weather getting wet, rolling around in the snow, tromping through rivers etc.. get something goose down.

I don't know how much rolling around in the snow I plan on doing. I will probably roll a bit when I learn to ski. O.o I do know that I want to hike, take pictures and get in all the winter type activities one is not afforded when one lives in Austin, Tx.

ok, so I take it Anchorage is your destination.
So, show up with a decent coat, and your first day in town catch a cab to Army-Navy in Anchorage. they'll fix you up with everything you need.
Ignore brand name, buy what works. Listen to the employees there.

It's funny when new people come here to work at the hospital, their Airforce Subzero's give them away.

Oh, ya'll are so funny! =P for me 40 is cold!! I live in Texas. I'm used to heat and humidity. Stick me in 100 degree weather with 50% humidity and I'm all good. Are you saying that I probably don't need to buy snow boots? or to wait until I get there to buy them. I don't know if Army-Navy carries size 5.5 shoes for females... O.o

If you are going to be living in Anchorage, then snow boots are optional. If you want to buy a pair of snow boots, then Sorel's Glacial Snow Boots are the best. They are rated to -100°F, waterproof, and have 15" gaters built-in. They have women sizes down to size 6. They are a bit heavy (about 5 pounds), and awkward to walk in, but they will keep your feet toasty warm.

Jackets that use down insulation are wonderful on those really cold days, but you don't want to be wearing one in the rain. Down jackets are great for most of the winter, but in the Autumn and Spring you will want a jacket with Hollofil or some other synthetic insulation.

Insulated gloves and some kind of head covering, such as a balaclava, should also be on your list of winter clothing. Whether or not you will need more is up to you and your comfort level. Dress in layers so you can add or remove clothing as the conditions require.
