To those moving to anchorage, have you ever been there? If not, relax - Anchorage has nearly all the big name box stores, car dealerships and chains you could want. Not all, but quite a few. Unless you are going out to the bush (in which case stopping at costco might be a good idea) you will be just fine. No need to bring your own nutmeg unless its a brand you can't live without. Spring is "break up" season - bring waterproof boots or invest in some. If you can bring your bike, skis, snowshoes, hiking boots or just buy it all there. There is a great parks system and many people enjoy outdoor activities. I would warn those with little tea cup sized dogs - there are eagles. The cost of living is higher, but typically the wages are higher too. The thing to realize is when people leave alaska a lot of time they just sell everything because it costs so much to ship it out. You can find many good moving sales on craigslist where everything literally must go.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that you couldn't get spices, lol. I had a pretty big assortment of spices before I moved, and I gave them away so it was relatively expensive to restock. Combined with the high cost of living expenses, I bought them on an as-needed basis.

I agree about the spices. We left all our spices with friends in NM when we came up- & had to replace them all up here at a huge expense. Nutmeg costs almost $5 for less than 2 oz. can at Carrs. Multiply that by dozens and dozens of spices; it adds up!

I buy my husband's favorite granola by the case here because there is only one store where I can fine it and that is 40 miles from where we live. Guess I should bring several cases?
