We are possibly relocating from NJ. I have been looking online for higher end homes with 5-6+ bedrooms and not finding much on the market. Also, everything looks pretty dated. Schools are not an issue, but my husband would be working in Germantown, and would like a commute less then his 1 hour drive now. I know nothing about ann arbor, except what research I have done online since this opportunity has presented itself. We do plan to come out in a few weeks, but it would be nice to know what neighborhoods to visit.
any information would be greatly appreciated!!!

Saline and Dexter have been ruined by exactly what you are looking for.

There are plenty of neighborhoods on the edges of Ann Arbor with large, newer, high-end homes. Examples can be found outside the city limits on the northeast side along Plymouth Rd., just north of town off Newport Rd. and in Barton Hills, and in Scio Township, west of Ann Arbor. Saline and Dexter also have those kinds of neighborhoods. Within the city itself, there are older neighborhoods with some beautiful, and quite large and expensive homes, especially area between Washtenaw Ave and the Huron River just east of downtown, or in the Burns Park area.

All of these would be anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to downtown. However, even in larger houses, 5-6 bedrooms are a bit less common than 4. Start talking to a real estate agent and I am sure you will see more options. I would also recommend the Ann Arbor Observer, a monthly with a real estate section that tends to focus on the high end of the market.

Try Canton, Dexter and Saline. Lots of large, newer homes.

There are a few larger places being built out there -- 5 and 6 bedrooms, even bigger -- but this is Ann Arbor and the rooms are tiny and the places are obscenely overpriced. I suggest you look just outside the city.

I'm in Canton. There are plenty of nice and new homes around. Try looking in the Summit area, over on Denton and Cherry Hill, Heritage Park area and Cherry Hills Village. Get ready for the high taxes but since you are from New Jersey it won't be a major shocker for you. Coming from NC, taxes are 2-3x higher here.

In aditioan to the places previously listed: Plymouth Township has some McMansions too. Outside of South Lyon, Northville. All pretty close to A2. You cold even go as far as Novi an still be in range of less than 1 hour - Novi is McMansion heaven.
