<-----Agrees. Air quality is an issue in many places but its true, the higher elevations are quite nice.

Ok, American Tug. I've done a little bit of research on Parks and Flagstaff. From the days classifieds, it looks as though we'd at least have a good chance of finding work that would support us reasonably. My question is how can I find out about rentals in Parks - or purchasing a small lot of land? I can't seem to find an actual paper for Parks itself. We're looking for an acre or even less, actually - and in an area not remote, but not in a crowded neighborhood. As I said, we'd proably put a mobile home on it for now and build as we go. Any clues for me on how to research that info - or a good contact for a realtor when we get closer to that move?

Be aware that you may have to spend up to $20000 for a septic system and you will very likely have to haul water.

I should weigh in here. I have asthma and have for 25 years. It would help if I didn't smoke as, when I stop, I breathe just fine. I was just fine until I got a bout of bronchitis, and am now on steriods but, again, I'd be fine if I just gave up these durn cigarettes completely.

For me, humidity is what makes my asthma really bad. I'd have no problem here if I just didn't smoke (duh!)

Ought to ask AmTug what was paid for that plot. wow. 700k? More?
Parks has NO jobs. Flagstaff has a few jobs. Housing in FLG starts at 425k.

Thank you for sharing the photos! You live in a beautiful place. I've always wanted to live in the country, but here I am in the city. Oh, well -- I have a big cul-de-sac lot with a garden and assorted kids and animals!

Smoking is what gave me my asthma, Movin On. I had blood clots in both lungs and very nearly died. My lungs were so damaged by the clots, the asthma resulted. I had already stopped smoking nearly 5 years by then, but I was such a heavy smoker - and I do mean heavy - the damage was there already, then being in an atmosphere around other smokers just did the rest. As it is now, it's not as bad as some, but this last week I've been one sick puppy and can't seem to kick it like I usually do. Course, it's been pretty hot here, with humidity over 50% most of the time, expected to be 80-90% this week.

Ponderosa, thanks for that info. Not sure I want to spend that much just on a septic system - and not too sure about hauling water all the time, either. Guess I was hoping to buy a somewhat developed lot, ready with utilities and such. Probably dreaming too high, I guess. Don't want to live in Flagstaff itself, though, either. We'll find our spot - we know we want Arizona, that much for sure.

You might be able to find a developed lot (septic and maybe a well) in Parks. But the price will be a lot higher. There are some wells there, but a lot are seasonal (work when it has rained for a while). Water hauling is available by contract if you don't want to mess with it yourself. Coconino County (where Parks is) has gotten really tough on septics over the past several years. I have property SE of Flagstaff. When I built, septics were all standard types. Today, everyone there is being required to put in "alternative" systems that cost 20K or more.

We're used to small town life, just folks, but want amenities not too awful far away. We want a place we can feel safe and welcome. We aren't rich, so for all of you who are posting on places to buy - can you throw in some rental info? We've got some savings, and are adding to it hoping to move within about 1 to 1 1/2 years. I'm a secretary, my husband is a data/personnel type person - both employed by the State of WV. So we're also interested in the job market. We had seriously been considering Kingman, but I've recently read about high crime, so that could change. Gilbert sounds nice from what I've seen. I am originally from Tennessee and if I thought I had to go into downtown Nashville to work every day, I'd hate it - so I'm wondering if going into Phoenix would be the same. Just a thought to consider.

We like to explore our world - Grand Canyon and that stuff just sounds awesome - just the scenery that we've never gotten to see....so all that is very attractive to us as well. We're both in our early 50's so we're looking for a small community we can call home the rest of our lives - have a small house with a yard and our cat and maybe a puppy and a garden - all those things a lot of people find boring. We enjoy meeting others, but also value our quiet time together - sitting on the porch enjoying the evening kind of thing.

So.....is there a place for us in Arizona? Of course I know you all have your favorites, but the more I hear, the better decision we can make.

Thanks for your input!
Do some research on Sierra Vista or Benson Arizona - preferablly Sierra Vista. SV is a city located adjacent to Ft. Huachuca (pronouned waCHOOka) in SE Az. The weather there (to me anyway) is nearly ideal. The problem will be job opportunities as it is in all of AZ outside Phoenix and Tucson. But having the Fort there means better odds of finding something. Also, don't know if it was mentioned but Springerville, Eager, and/or Safford might fit the bill. You might also consider New Mexico. The climate there is like here except a little cooler and they have more small towns that have an economy of their own than Arizona does.
