I am going through my dad's old slides of Rocky Point fishing trips with my uncles back in the early '60s. Back then, it was a backwater place. They pitched tents and stayed right on the beach and built fires and camped for about a week. You guys make me think the place has really changed. LOL

I first started visiting RP in the 60s too. It has always had the four necessary items: shrimp, beer, ice and gasoline. Everything else is fluff that drives up prices. We have a place in Cholla Bay. I remember some years back when the power poles went up bringing in grid power. As we drove into Cholla, I said to my wife "there goes the neighborhood".

This doesn't quite seem like a fair comparison, San Diego is a very wealthy American city with all of the amenities that entails. Puerto Peñasco is, well, not that (which is also why it's odd that people are complaining about the "Americanization" of PP.....in a thread comparing it to an American city).

With that being said, I abhor both the spring break atmosphere (PP is downright quaint when you compare it to nearly every other beach town in Mexico) and the "resort" experience, and yet I've had wonderful times in PP.

And I don't know how people can say it's not cheaper. I've rented two-bedroom luxury condos right on the beach for <$100 a night. Of course, if you're paying $15 for a hotel breakfast you're doing it wrong to begin with (hint: buy groceries from a local store and fresh seafood from the markets in Old Town and cook meals at your hotel!).

At the end of the day, if I had to pick just one place to go I'd end up in San Diego because the urbanity is still more my thing, but again it's completely apples and oranges. PP is very worthwhile in its own right, even though it's getting a bad rap in this thread.
