That's what I'm looking for. No neighbors. I want peace and quiet. I'm in southern Arizona now and I've looked at so much land over the past few weeks and can't find my quiet spot. Lots of gorgeous land, but every one of them had a bad neighbor next door. By bad I mean either noisy or trashy. Blasting music, revving engines in home garages turned into auto repair shops, junkyards, etc. One neighbor sells used toilets from his yard. At least half of his land is a sea of used toilets. Who wants to live next door to that?

My problem is that I don't want to live completely off-grid, so finding that combination of no noisy neighbors and electricity looks like it's going to be impossible unless I was rich enough to afford a lot more land as a buffer.

I used to live in a small woodsy town in WA state growing up. It was very isolating and it didn't bother me until I reached my late teens early 20s. At most I wouldn't mind it as long as it doesn't extent more than a few weeks.

That doesn't seem that isolated to me. Didn't realize there were enough trees to block your view of neighbors for a long ways. True, it is a few miles to the store.

Some people can handle isolation some can't. OTOH some people, living in the heart of the city feel isolated and some living out in the boonies don't.

When I get rich I'm going to buy all the land as far as I can see. I just want a little quiet.

I love land. I just like the feeling of owing the rocks, the soil, the water, and the lovely creature growing on it freely without being bothered by boring human beings, like myself.

I tried it for a week and I couldn't do it. I couldn't wait to get home. I realize I need to be able to walk to the store. The fact that I couldn't even order chinese food or pizza or the fact that UPS or Fedex can't deliver to me because they are not on a real road. I realize need to see people even if we don't talk every day, I know they are there. I wouldn't mind living in a remote area, but as long as there are people around, I'm fine with that.

The desert is a healing place however, but I need all the amenities close by.

I would love to live in Arizona one day but in an area where there's more hustle and bustle.

Thoughts?
Depends on the money and how you want to do it.

I've heard of off-grid communities appearing in the United States, like a German village, that are not Amish. They live off and misers of the land. They have heating, electricity, modern plumbing. They use the power of community to bulk buy things like solar panels and other things that would be otherwise expensive to buy on your own. I could deal with that as long as I was surrounded by others with intellectual interest.

Then there is living on your own. I know a couple people that do it. It takes 1 hour from a freeway to get to their place on a crummy dirt road. He likes the silence, he has his dogs and guns.

My thoughts. I would have an isolation house disconnect from everything to clear my mind, I think that's what everyone needs. My dream is to have a small house with a baby grand in the woods.

You want hustle and bustle? Come to downtown phoenix during lunch hour. lol.

Out for a ride in the desert south of Tucson today. Check out the large home in the middle of "not much" we saw from one of our stops.

Rough roads.

When out in the desert you are on your own!

Beautiful country out there! Facing west, toward Green Valley, at around 5,500'.
