Pulled in there for gas at about 3:30 AM apparently missed a sign and had to drive around a bit to find one of the gas stations. Found myself in what was apparently tweakerville...people just wandering around on foot in the middle of the cold night and just hanging out...found this odd behavior for "normal" small town folk at 3 AM

I'm not one to feel like an outsider while traveling but this place definately gave me a weird vibe.

I've been to Willcox 1 or 2 times and, it was def run down. Sad because it has a lot of nice looking older buildings.

Which is a shame.

Willcox has so much going for it...great weather, (a little chilly in the winter but otherwise very nice) wonderful scenery, (Chiricahuas, Dos Cabezas, Grahams, Sulpher Springs valley, Winchester Mts, Galioros, the Playa, etc..) and it sits in my opinion a beautiful prairie environment.

Cool old downtown, fantastic history...the whole area is full of it...that valley was part of the Outlaw Trail, tons of old mines, gunfights that took place there...(Wyatt Earp caught up with some of the Tombstone OK Corral guys there)... also seems like I remember the outlaws that supposedly hid gold in Colossal Cave were caught there. They say that when the Law would come to town half the male population would leave.

Some of the best, in my opinion farmland and orchards anywhere....the temps are perfect for apples, cherries, peaches, corn, beans, and greenhouse tomatoes.

Willcox could be a destination spot, right on the freeway easy access, etc....but someone has dropped the ball and instead you have a lot of it looking run down.

I still really like the town and hope it becomes what it could be.

Right on target on all counts.
It's really sad what's become of Willcox.

Ken

PS - I should also point out that Warren Earp - youngest of the Earp brothers (and not really that well known) - was killed in a shootout in Willcox in 1900.

Interesting replies...I had no idea there was so much history there. Maybe if I find myself going thru that area in the daytime I will take a better look around.
