NEEDLES — Word spread quickly about Bashas’ Grocery closing May 9, which means the loss of more than 40 jobs and Needles’ only grocery store.

Needles

Moderators: I know Needles is in Cali but since its economy is more a part of Arizona, that's why I'm posting here.

Word is many of Needles residents WILL need to drive to Blythe with is 100 miles away to use the Cali benefits since Needles ain't exactly a rich town. Has anybody heard of an exception for those people to use their Cali benefits here in Arizona since we have lots of grocery stores in Bullhead City as well as Fort Mohave which are 30 miles away?

Definitely OK to keep it here. Not a good situation. Making people who are already strapped drive 100 miles to a grocery store doesn't sound like good sense. Hope they work it out.

Sounds like a dream come true if someone wants to open a small independent grocery with no competition! Wish I had the money

Are you talking about SNAP (aka food stamps)? That's a federal program.

13. Can I use my electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card in another state?
EBT cards can be used in all States including the District of Columbia, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
EBT cards cannot be used in Puerto Rico because Puerto Rico is operating under a block grant instead of the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program.
So they can cross the River to use SNAP. Still a drive, but not 100 miles.

Whew! That's good for my Needles friends since we do have Smiths and Safeway in Fort Mohave and WalMart is just up the road another 5 miles in Bullhead.

Dang, hubs just told me this afternoon that it was closing. I'm so bummed because I live closer to Basha's than Smith's and I love driving through Needles to shop there.

Bummed.

You must be down by Willow then. A friend of mine is below Boundary Cone.

Then city manager Bill Way was instructed to work with Bashas’ and Reliable Properties to come up with a solution. There were several concerns about the store closing at the time including, but not limited to, lost jobs; California Women, Infants and Children vouchers that wouldn’t be accepted across the river in Arizona; and other issues that would make grocery shopping particularly difficult for Needles residents

Bashas

THA'LL be a big problem right there tho I think there's a small neighborhood store left in Needles.

Bashas in Needles is old, rundown, dirty, and limited in product compared to other Bashas. I know San Bernardino Co. had been talking about Needles merging with Clark County, NV, as Needles is no where near the SB county seat. If Needles became part of Clark County, it wouldn't be much help to WIC participants, as most people living in Laughlin NV also do their shopping in Bullhead City/Fort Mohave, AZ.

That'd make sense but; doesn't changing a state's borders have to go through the US gov't?

But I def agree with you since the Clark County line could be moved real easy about 15 miles down and Needles Hwy already goes to Laughlin.

OTOH: I'd be kinda nice if Needles was given to Mohave County which would solve a LOT of the problems you said.
