Perfect . . . ?

Tough to compare Basic Adult Personal Responsibility related to the ownership of a vehicle (registration, insurance, maintenance, etc) with being perfect.

What's next . . . MOMMY'S FAULT or THE DOG ATE THE PAPERWORK?

I had the EXACT same problem when I moved here, too. I didnt have a chance to get to the MDV and I got pulled over for failing to stop completely (downtown PHX). I got a ticket for that, and a ticket for the tags. I went and got it settled, took it to court, and they dropped the charge. I still had to pay the moving violation, which sucked, but whatever. Get it done quickly, as they can continue to pull you over every day if they feel like it, so be careful and get it done ASAP. AZ police dont mess around.

A lot of places that do payday loans, title loans, that kind of stuff, also do some DMV services and as adriver noted, some of them are 24/7 operations, so you can go whenever.

Really? I didn't even know places like that existed. I've been spending my entire time trying to figure out how to get back to the DMV.

How could anyone "forget and/or ignore" their vehicle registration? If in doubt, a simple glance at the Rear License Plate would confirm the status of the registration.

What about the insurance on the vehicle? Was that "forgotten and/or ignored" as well?

Whatever happened to Personal Responsibility?

I guarantee I have more responsibility at my job right now than you've had in your entire life.

I'm the epitome of responsible, but my situation was pretty dire so I wasn't paying attention to little things like this (and, yes, vehicle registration is a VERY minor detail of life).

As I said, I made it down to the DMV and got my license, but was rejected for vehicle registration. Renewed my insurance too and changed it to Arizona. In fact, because I did this, I would have HAD to send my plates back to my previous state anyway. So if I didn't plan on registering plates in Arizona, what was I planning to do? Drive around without plates?

Furthermore, insurance costs WAY more than registration. If I was planning to skip the whole thing, wouldn't I skip out on the insurance too?

Makes no sense.

And I was not able to take off of work. I'm still on my 90 day probationary period and can't take off. If I did, I risk being fired, which is worse than even an outlandish bullsh*t ticket.

In any event, thank you all for the recommendation! I definitely plan on fighting this and will see what I could do to at least reduce this ticket to a reasonable price.

What they would do is give you a temp tag for 30 days in which you would need to go get your smog done, show proof, then get your plates. (all stuff you can do at one of the many 24 hr places).

I think the $650 is if you show up with still expired tags when you go to court. It's the same thing when you get cited for driving without insurance if you show up in court with insurance they drop the fine the reason it's so high is to get you to register or insurance.

You could have gotten a temporary tag from one of those DMV places which are open late they charge extra fees but if the car is already in your name you can get up to 3 months as long as you have insurance. I'm little surprised when you did go to the MVD the first time and had an issue with the lien holder they should have offered you a temporary registration for up to 30 days or 3 months I can't remember which. Just get it taken care of and go to court worst that can happen is ask if you can make payments or something.

I respect that you are a vet but you are old enough to be responsible. You should learn what the rules are when owning a car, house, etc. and have a follow-up system. Don't be a kid and cry when you get caught. Do what you have to do to make things right. I think most of us mark things on a calendar. I would have forgotten to get my military ID renewed and driver's license if I had not seen the notes - I check my calendar every day. For handling living expenses I have a binder, a page for each month, use journal system. On each page I have 2 columns - one for money coming in and another for my monthly expenses. Total for the month and carry over the surplus figure to the next month at the top of the incoming money/ies. Also, before I move I always make a list of things I need to do before the move and when I get there, and who/companies that I need to give my new address and phone number to.

Relocating and a new job takes time to adjust - our good wishes are with you.

dcarney, thank you for your service, however I am with Bummer on this one. It was my first thought when you wrote "unbeknownst to me. . . ." I personally was just checking my rear plate the other day.

But there's tons of good advice in this thread, good luck to you sir.

Update:

I went down to the court house today and was able to get the fine down to $200, which is far more reasonable for the infraction.

To the OP. Pay the fine and quit complaining.
You had to follow the rules in the military too or face the consequences.
It does not matter if you can afford it or not. You were the one that did not register you car like you should have.
I spent 6 years myself back in the '66-72 era, made a lot less money than you do today, and managed to keep my car legal.
I suggest you set yourself up with a reminder to keep up with things like this.
While I find the amount of the fine rather high, only the court can reduce the amount due.
