Hey all.

I recently rushed to move down to Arizona for a job (I had been out of work for almost 5 months at that point after having a rough adjustment to civilian life from the military....which apparently is still happening). Unbeknownst to me at the time, my registration had expired from my previous state.

I did realize this a few weeks later and attempted to rectify it by getting a registration in AZ. Unfortunately, the DMV gave me a hard time because the lien on my title had a different company name than the release of lien statement and the people at the DMV wouldn't let me register.

I started my 50 hour per week job and have been unable to address this situation since because I'm on my 90 day probation period and don't want to get fired.

Well, I was finally able to figure something out and switched shifts this week with a coworker so that I would be off on Thursday.

Unfortunately, I got pulled over tonight (in Scottsdale of all places) and got handed a ticket that will cost me $650, which I will definitely not be able to pay right now.

After receiving this ticket, I did a lot of research and realized that there has been a problem with people trying to get out of paying fees. But that's not what I was doing.

The cop told me that I may be able to rectify the situation by obtaining the registration and then presenting it to the court. But when I researched this online, it looks like there are a few situations where this can be done, but that mine is likely non-negotiable.

Any thoughts on where to go from here?

theres 24 hour title places all over. Go to one, get it done, take it to court, you will probably be good.

Six hundred and fifty dollars, wow! For expired tags? That's wild. I agree it's worth getting yourself registered ASAP and then going to court to see if they'll reduce the fine. A lot of places that do payday loans, title loans, that kind of stuff, also do some DMV services and as adriver noted, some of them are 24/7 operations, so you can go whenever.

That's your best bet.

Register, and show up in court with all the proof that you registered.

I'm not sure that those contract places (or at least all of them) can do registration on an out of state vehicle. Check before you go.

Am I missing something here . . . ?

How could anyone "forget and/or ignore" their vehicle registration? If in doubt, a simple glance at the Rear License Plate would confirm the status of the registration.

What about the insurance on the vehicle? Was that "forgotten and/or ignored" as well?

Whatever happened to Personal Responsibility?

yes, any title place can do registration. For an out of state vehicle you will just need to get your smog done first.

Because we're not all perfect like you?

Heck, at one point, I went nearly two years on expired tags. Of the 5 vehicles I owned then, only one of them was new enough that I had to renew every two years. The rest of them qualified for 5 year tags. Yep, the new-er vehicle was the one I drove every day, was the 2 year renewal vehicle, and I completely forgot about renewing it. It also just so happened that while I got email notifications at renewal time, I had those emails sent to a bulk email address that I didn't check for quite some time. Yep, bad idea on my part...didn't think about it at the time...my epic fail.

Finally caught it one day while I was transferring my license plate to a new rear bumper, and realized the tag was well over a year out of date.

Other than that, seriously....how often do YOU check your license plate? I'll bet it's rarely to never. If you do check it often, I'd suspect that you have a memory issue of your own. Same way that most people never check their tail light, brake light, and license plate bulbs, and only find out that one is blown if someone else (or the officer that just pulled them over) tells them so.

Go to court, show anything that shows you were working on it. IT should get dismissed if what you say is true. At the least you will probably get some kind of reduction.

I put renewal info on my calendar. Then I don't forget. $650 is criminal theft. I'd go to jail first. Oh, they charge you for that too.
