FYI, the "cactophiiles" say that if you transplant that way (break off part of one cactus and stick it in the ground), you should let the broken off part "scab" over for a few days, even up to a week before replanting. If you dont do this, the freshly busted off place is subject to rot. I have done this a few times and it seems like good advice to me..

I think these may be "fish hook" barrel cactus (might not be right and I cant remember the other name they might be). This is at Lake Havasu and you can get the impression that the roots are simply to hold the cactus from falling down the cliff. This all looks like solid rock. These cactus dont need no stinken soil...
