We are planning on flying into Phoenix around July 6th. For our vacations we log a log of miles by flying into a city and then heading out seeing as many things as we can and not lingering at any location for long. So distance is not a big issue as we love to visit all the local towns along the way and eat at the local restaurants, bakeries, ice cream, retail, etc. We will visit the local tourist sight, town, and move on.

We have been to the Grand Canyon, fyi. What suggestions would you have and should we go towards White Sands and Texas or more north west and do Hoover, Death Valley, and maybe San Diego?

Also, being from Tennessee all we know is the national news about Mexico and the dangers. Obviously, you have to use good sense but are there good crossings very US populated for day trippers who might walk across the border to eat and shop and staying right on the main drag?

Thanks for any ideas.

I suggest checking out a ghost town called Oatman, just southwest of Kingman about 28 miles. I haven't been there before, but will plan on doing so this year.

Take that highway west to Mesquite Creek and drive north on 95 up to Laughlin, NV and you can gamble if you're into that sort of thing.

I vacationed AZ in Oct. and will be traveling there again this Monday.

If your looking to travel South and a bit East I recommend a trip across the border to Nogales Senora, cheap parking on the US side, simple to cross, safe, and lot's to look at.

We also did a road trip to Bisbee, a very cool and historical town built from copper mining.

Depending on which highway you take a you can stop at Tombstone (OK Corral) along the way. It looks good but is nothing more than a tourist stop. We paid for a show to sit through that thankfully I wont need to repeat.
