Agreed: do not use Sedona as a base. It is too expensive and too far from the rest of the things you want to see. You have some excellent recomendations here. I believe you will want to make reservations for Antelope Canyon, and Page is perfect for a base there.

rational1 made a good travel plan for South Rim to Antelope (Page). Landing in Phoenix, probably go straight to Sedona, and maybe if you think you need to, stay one night there. Otherwise, on to Williams and then beyond.

Happy Trails!

We were in AZ for a week... flew through Phoenix, and drove to the Grand Canyon. We spent 3 nights / 3 days at the GC, spent 1 day driving west to visit Meteor Crater and the Petrified Forest / Painted Desert, and down to Sedona for 2 days before heading back to Phoenix.

The Grand Canyon in winter is a real treat! Driving at your own pace through the Painted Desert is very nice, with lots of opportunities for great pictures, and we did a sunrise balloon ride in Sedona.

We stayed in the Village on the South Rim... I highly recommend it to staying outside of the park.

Thank you, everyone. I'm in the midst of re-working everything. Right now, I'm planning to fly in and out of Phoenix, drive to GC upon arrival. I was able to get reservations for a night at GC. From there, I don't know where the heck I'm headed, but with all the tips here, I'll figure it out.

Thanks again.

Doh! Drive EAST from the canyon to Meteor Crater and the Painted Desert...

I have a few of my GC, Painted Desert, and Sedona pictures on my album in my profile.

If you like pie, in Williams, AZ there is the Pine Country Restaurant that bakes 35+ types of pie on a daily basis. The food is good too.

The Grand Canyon train runs out of Williams which is right on I-40 and a motel town since Williams is sort of a jumping off point to go up to the Grand Canyon. There's a firm in Williams that gives "jeep" tours into the canyon too.
