It's insane how stigmatized cannabis still is and how it's assumed that if somebody smokes a joint in their free time that they cannot be a productive member of society or a reliable employee. I really hope to live to see the day that this changes.

i'm thinking perhaps the federal govt would give an employer some type of tax cut for operating a drug free workplace and that may qualify as losing a monetary benefit under federal regulations or some b.s. along those lines.

Pretty sure that most businesses that have a federal contract or participate in services to a Federal entity have to maintain a drug-free workplace. MJ is still illegal on the federal level and Govt Contracts can be very restrictive, affecting the way a company does business. Certain sections of my employer came under heavier scrutiny, extensive background checks, couldn't hire anyone who wasn't a citizen of the US (no H1Bs) etc. Mandatory Drug Testing came along with that but...after being hired? I haven't had to do a drug test in 20 years. Not that I partake...I have never touched the stuff...but if I wanted to I doubt they would know. Just not worth my job.

If it came down to losing a lucrative contract or firing employees that pop positive...guess which way the company is going to go.

I agree - and I don't smoke. I've seen alcohol destroy more lives than cannabis.

Way, way, way, way WAY, WAY, WAY more. It's not even close and it's not even funny how big the difference in danger and detriment to society is. Yet you touch people's beloved alcohol, and you end up with what happened during prohibition. Drunk driving and violent, angry drunk people vs people sitting around giggling and getting the munchies - hmmmm...
