We are moving this fall to Buckeye and will be bringing our car but plan to trade for a different car soon after we arrive. Since we are retired, does it make sense to just register the new car when we buy it and not worry about the other (trade-in)?

We do not meet any of the criteria for needing to transfer registration on our old car immediately. No job, no kids, no school etc. Just trying to simplify the transition and if I can avoid registering the old car I will.

It is my understanding that once you have an address you have 10 days to register your car, get a state drivers license and a license plate for the car. If anyone knows differently, please chime in.

Couldnt he always just say hes only here for a few months? Think you have to be in the state for 7 months in a year in order to get in trouble for not registering. Could be wrong though.

That was kind of what I was wondering... can I get by just taking the position I am a snowbird (I am in an 55+ community) and then when I am ready register the new car go ahead and trade my out of state registered cars then... I really don't expect to wait more than two months anyway.

You're suppose to register generally within 10 working days of taking up permanent residency.. Sometimes they are lax on this time limit. But if you got stopped by a cop for an infraction he/she may write you up and it would cost more than to register it right away.
State law requires that you register your vehicle with the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) immediately after establishing residency.

Residency in AZ is more than just having an Arizona address. The state considers you a resident if any one of the following situations applies to you:
•You obtain an Arizona driver's license.
•Your kids attend school here without paying an out-of-state tuition rate.
•You're employed in Arizona (seasonal agricultural workers exempt).
•You remain in the state for 7 months or more in one calendar year.
•You have an Arizona business that houses and operates vehicles here.
•You own an AZ business that transports people or goods in the state.
•You're registered to vote in AZ.

It's a bit of a gamble if you drag your feet. I didn't register my RV since it was way cheaper in Illinois, and there so many snowbirds, no one would notice. The low Illinois rate may have been an error. After a number of years the AZ rate dropped low enough I finally registered it in AZ.

Yep, that's the list I knew about.... I would NOT meet any of those by the end of 2019 if I consider myself a snowbird, if I moved September 1, of 2019.
