Made it only as far as Pine-Strawberry today, wasn't able to sell the longer trip to Pinetop to the DW (I think it's the complement to DH?).

We took 87 and it was quite the pleasant drive, though some truck incident in Payson slowed down our return path a bit.
Google Maps took us nicely around most of the blockage.

Yeah 60 does not sound like a good alternative.. I don't like the idea of one wrong move causing a cliff dive.

Salt River Canyon is beautiful, but if you are driving, you can't fully appreciate the scenery. 87 is longer, easier, and still scenic.

Take 87, one of the prettiest drives in AZ. You climb up and over the Mazatzal Mountains, then start climbing up the Mogollon Rim.
