This Goldilocks wishes there was a third choice or a "none of the above".

Tucson is too small and insular but Phoenix is just way too darned huge and sprawling.

Per population, it's more sprawled out than Los Angeles!

If I had to answer which city is the Austin of Arizona, I'd probably say Tucson. Or would it be Flagstaff?

Well you know what I am trying to get at. I wouldn't live in Tucson, but it's fun to visit.

Right now I'm getting my exit plan in order and leaving Ca. I love Az but can't decide on where to move. I've narrowed it down to Tempe or Oro Valley. My hesitation is Phoenix is a lot like where I live now (Orange County). If I'm going to change my life and experience new things I think I need to at least start in Oro Valley and see how I feel after a year.

Oro Valley is like if Phoenix were in Tucson

So the ideal place would have:

--Phoenix's slightly warmer winters.
--Tucson's cooler summers and higher rainfall totals (Believe it or not, despite higher
rainfall, Tucson's sunshine amount is almost the same as Phoenix's.)
--Tucson's scenery.
--Have a population/area about the average of the two.
--Have Phoenix's more geographically central location.
--Phoenix's better job market.
--Phoenix's better freeway system.

It's so much fun creating the ideal place in one's head, lol.

Essentially, the PHX metro covers the same geographic area as Los Angeles, yet it has fewer people. At least I think that's what he means.

No, just #4.

I work all day long so don't give a flying flip about scenery (how much time does anyone actually look at a mountain anyway?) or outdoor temperatures.

I would assume that most people will vote for the place they live. More people live in Phoenix, so it will get more votes.

I tried Phoenix, but it was all urban sprawl and walled yards in scraped-flat desert. I love the open, hilly areas around Tucson with spectacular views.
