All house Democrats and 8 Republicans joined forces to kill a civil asset forfeiture reform bill. They used the classic excuse to allow police and prosecutors to seize & sell assets without conviction: funding. Disgraceful. Such reforms are popular with Democrats in other states.

Wow. That is horrible. Its also horrible that few people even care about this issue. There is 62 replies to a question about military license plates but almost no interest in defending civil liberties.

Most people don't what civil asset forfeiture is. All the more reason to share information about it.

Most people assume that its taking away money from drug dealers and they assume it does not effect them personally. But for the most part they really do not think much about the issue at all. I agree the word needs to get out there.

What is scary is from your link on reason that with the almost certain budget problems all states are going to face, asset forfeiture becomes more popular with state governments. This Arizona vote is a perfect example. But I don't believe allowing the police to steal from people "legally" is the way shore up budget deficits.

The media kept this quiet too - this is the first I even heard there was a bill being considered. CAF is one of the most unamerican police state things a government can do. The seizure of private property for state gain without due process. That is one of the premises upon which this country was founded. Pretty scary that nobody cares. But thanks for the wakeup, it appears we need to try this again next year.

Far be it from me to take the side of the media, but I suspect they've been a little busy these last few months dealing with a worldwide pandemic, to report on one of many bills in the Legislature.
