Normally I do not start new threads about extant topics but this is a new question due our crashing economy.

I am aware that housing prices have dropped significantly but; is the job situation much worse as well?

Still here in the Phx area but am auditioning other areas here in Arizona for a number of reasons.

Probably about the same as anywhere. Certain sectors are slow, others are fine. Construction seems to be picking back up a bit and surprisingly they're selling. I know the landscape and pool builders are slow. Not sure about automotive. I think they're doing ok. Let me know if I can do anything specific to help.

Automotive might be a tad slow but out in Yuca is a new PVC pipe plant and they are advertising, the rebar plant is coming back on line, there is a new pipe plant at the airport plus Guardian fiberglass just revamped its factory. Jobs to be had just not in your line of work, but then again I was a Master ASE tech and switched to facilities repair and maintenance. kinda like if its put together with nuts and bolts we can switch fields and keep moving along.

Not a general technician here: I stick with alignment, brake and suspension work.

Now for scary: despite my knowledge base being only 20% of a 'bumper-to-bumper' mechanic----------my income is only about 25% less on average (before taxes) vs. a good general tech. Apparently; guys who really understand suspensions and can align them are fairly rare. Note I keep my distance from lifting/lowering vehicles outside of aligning them--------way too many headaches there.

I work for Nucor which bought North Star steel back in 2003. It is indeed starting production, but slower than expected due to economy. I am hoping to gain a promotion and move that way soon! Time will tell, but Nucor with or without me is starting up Nucor Kingman, LLC.
