A friend's son got his car impounded for expired AZ registration. He wasn't driving it at the time, but it was parked on the street in front of his apartment. I thought this was a fine but didn't think they would impound a car just for that.......I suspect there is more going on than the kid is telling his folks......will they actually impound a car for expired registration?

I agree, Michael . . . there's gotta be a point or two being conveniently omitted.

How "expired" was the registration . . . days, weeks or possibly months? Had either the vehicle or the license plate been reported stolen? Had it been involved in an accident, maybe a hit and run? Was the registered owner "legal" to drive?

Also, if the vehicle had been parked on private property and/or in a garage, it would not have been seized.

I'm not sure how expired the plates were, but I would guess a couple months at least as the kid has not been working for about a year. The kid is aware that if he had parked in the assigned parking space on private property that it would have not immediately be the problem it is now (until he drove it). It was a new car a year or so ago and there is no damage on it so I would guess that it was not involved in an accident. His license is legal unless it has been suspended for something we don't know about. I question whether he has current insurance as well. My main question was "should my friend use the fact that they impounded the vehicle to press his son for the complete real facts" becuse they don't usually impound a car for expired plates, only issue a ticket.

If the vehicle is parked on street, not private property/garage, then it can be impounded.

my friend was from california, we were staying in an apartment complex provided to us from our jobs. The apartment police went around looking at "out of state" plates, writing #'s down. One day she went out to go to work and her car was gone as were a bunch of others--all impounded for not having valid AZ plates.
