Lots of areas in California can get some heat waves, but except in the Mohave Desert area of So Cal (places like Thermal, Palm Springs) and, of course, Death Valley, which are very hot in summer, southern Arizona summer temps are generally higher than So Cal or inland valley Calif temps.

Also, Mojave desert gets rain (if any) in winter, Sonoran gets rain (if any) in both winter and summer, making it both hot AND humid in July and August.

Needles or Blythe are both in CA and are just a few miles from the border. The heat feels the same in most of the CA deserts. Our son lives in Northridge(northwest of LA) and they regularly get over a 100. Because of the humidity and population density, it feels way more uncomfortable than Phoenix in the summer.

The humidity is uncomfortable in California when it is hot, but it cools down there at night, so you have a break. I am still not used to the 95 degree midnights here after 5 years.

Humidity is an important consideration- I absolutely hate humidity. Arizona is a dry heat. It does get hot, though. We usually stop asking "how hot" it is out around April. The way I figure it, is if it's already 112 degrees out, will it really make a difference when it's 115? Nope.

Phoenix heat = hotter then LA!!
unless you have lived in az in phoenix then you would know that it gets up to 120 degrees with humidity in the summer especially august makes it worse then where ever your son is getting 100 degree whether. live down here for three months sometime in the summer then say something about phoenix.

I would not give people the impression that 120 in Phoenix is typical. 1990 (the summer of 122) was a LONG time ago.
