Arizonans with concealed weapons permits will be able to take a handgun into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol.

It would require bar and restaurant owners who want to ban weapons to post a sign next to their liquor license. Drinking while carrying a weapon would be illegal.

So you're allowed to take a gun into a bar, but not drink alcohol, odd.

My friends there used to own a bar on the border of Peoria & Glendale and back then the law was that you could carry your pistol in but had to give it to the bartender to hold for you while you imbibed. (?)

Now I and many others can go to a Pizza joint and eat some food and not break the law because they sell beer. This law was not about CCW in bars where the assumption is you went there to drink but to go to any restaurant to eat and be able to CCW. Since most restaurants in AZ sell beer this made eating out with a CCW difficult or illegal.

i think this will just lead to a lot more places posting - i didn't see the huge deal with this either way

just seems like more legislation that doesn't do much except distract from big issues

it was like when I was living in MN and they opened up their carry laws, which resulted in tons of "guns prohibited on premises" signs

i expect the net effect to be pretty small for the amount of work that legislators and businesses will undertake

i'm also fairly confident that insurance companies in AZ will start looking at liquor establishments in AZ to make sure they are posting that guns are prohibited in their underwriting/rating

in the end it will also just add confusion to the CCW holder

If I CCW in a restaurant that serves liquor under the old law I was committing a crime and if caught would face legal consequences. If I ignore a sign that says no guns allowed and get caught all that I risk is being told to leave, no law broken unless you refuse to leave. That make a big difference to me.

One would hope... But really, why would you wanna do that?! I suppose it may come in handy for the non-smoking, milk-shake drinking customer base of the bars.

Why is that odd? I go to a dance place and it's considered a bar/restaurant - but a lot of us don't drink alcohol. We buy soda or bottled water, some drink O'Doul's. Licensed bodyguards have been allowed for a long time to carry in a bar, and the ones I know who do carry, don't drink. You can go to a bar and not imbibe...
