Hi everyone,
I'm considering a move to Arkansas. I've never been there, but I hear good things about its natural beauty and affordability. I tend to be pretty progressive-minded, and I feel comfortable in places where there is tolerance for sexual orientation, religious diversity, cultural diversity... I'm a Unitarian Universalist (a very liberal religion.) I wonder which cities would suit me the best. I have a chronic medical issue so I'd like to be near a good hospital. It would be great if the city had good public transportation as well but it's not mandatory. Does anyone have suggestions for me?
Thanks in advance for any help!!

Little Rock would probably be your best bet. Its the most liberal area of Arkansas. While most of central Arkansas and the state as a whole is very conservative, Little Rock itself is not. There is a universalist church in Little Rock on Reservoir Rd.

Thanks, Bchris!! I'm looking into it. I forgot to mention that I'm a vegetarian. I eat a lot of organic fruits and vegetables. From what I've seen so far, there are no Trader Joes in AR. I wonder if there's Whole Foods. Any kind of large health food store would probably be fine.

I agree with bchris02. Here in Little Rock we have three exceptionally good hospitals as well as a dedicated heart hospital, and of course doctors to support all of them. North Little Rock also has two smaller hospitals. We do have public transportation (bus) but I don't know how good it is or how well it covers the city's of L.R. and N.L.R.

Little Rock and North Little Rock are two different cities divided by the Arkansas River.

Thanks ArkansasSlim!

Someone I know also mentioned Eureka Springs and Hot Springs. Do you all know much about those areas?

Eureka is quite liberal, but very small and not immediately accessible to a quality hospital or range of doctors. Little Rock is your best bet for a broad mix of people and viewpoints while having the best medical care nearby, but Fayetteville is worth considering too. Unless you need something extremely specialized, there's really nothing that can't be handled in Fayetteville, and it recently got a branch of the medical school located there so quality should only continue to improve.

Well, Eureka Springs would probably fit your needs as well as any place else in Arkansas. Keep in mind that good jobs are not plentiful there. Most are service-oriented (hotel, restaurant, retail), type jobs.

It is always a good idea to go there and see before you finalize your plans to visit. Go at the end of July. If you can handle the heat and humidity, ticks and chiggers, then you should be ok.

Heat, humidity, ticks and chiggers? Hmmm, are summers hot and humid all over AR? What parts of AR have the mildest Summers? I'm not real comfortable with ticks and I don't even know what a chigger is.

Chiggers are little blood suckers smaller than a pin head and make your skin itch like crazy.
