I used to live there in the mid 70's and it was two separate towns, Helena and West Helena, and both were thriving. Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe I read that they changed the name to what it is now because both were struggling economically and neither could sustain their infastructures so they decided to merge the towns. Neither town wanted to part with their name so they hyphenated it.
