I have gotten reports from people connected to the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas. Claiming they are having a hard time finding meat. I didn't ask for specifics, because the person I was listening to wasn't talking to me, and they weren't in charge of procurement, anyway.

I am not talking about prices going up, just where it isn't available.

I see shortages in other parts of the country, but haven't seen them here, yet. I was sort of expecting meat shortages, here, but several months from now, or maybe next year, so this caught me off guard. Is anyone else seeing any shortages in this region?

(On line searches simply return a lot of propaganda.)

When we were there at the beginning of September, the BBQ Hog ran out of chicken the second time we went there.
Recently, where I am in AZ a couple of weeks back our local Coco's restaurant ran out of chicken.
I read about an avian flu that has affected the wild bird population here and wonder if that has affected the domestic poultry. Last week while birding in a local community park, I came upon a male house finch who exhibited signs of the disease.
We buy chicken every week from the WalMart here and besides the insane prices so far no shortages.

Thanks. I have had a similar experience.

Bird flu has hit domestic poultry pretty hard, up north,
but barely any across the South.

If you go here:
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/dat...ommercial.html
page down a couple times, you will see a map of where the outbreaks have been.

I don't know where the person mentioned above got their info.
Kinda hoping it is an unsubstantiated rumor.

Have you bought Turkey at the Deli lately ? It's a real premium.

May be a real tough Thanksgiving for many people this year.

I was disappointed in the article, when it came to preventive measures. They left out several useful measures, like providing overhead protection and removing standing water that might attract wild birds. (Wild birds that stop to rest and get some water, are the most likely source, when there is only one infected flock in an area.)

ILike, I'm in western Ky. and we have a couple bar b cue places who will shut down early some nights because they ran out of meat. This isn't a meat shortage, it's just they didn't cook enough for the traffic through the front door.

OP, possibly check around for meat processing stores. There's one near Paducah, Ky., where we shop occasionally that has weekly specials. This week it's 2 (14-16 oz.) T-bone steaks, a 2 lb. chuck roast, 2 lb. boneless pork chops, 2 lb. pork steaks, and 2 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts for $41. And their meat is always good and tender. Two other towns where I've lived had places like this that had meat specials all the time, so you might want to check around.

It has become apparent that there isn't really a meat shortage, but that the margins are getting thin.

Personal research, discussions on the Net, and a discussion I had with another person associated with the food bank have all pointed to a lack of "meat at discounted prices, that the food bank normally procures."

It appears the food bank won't procure meat at the prices I pay for it, and that discounted, surplus, meat is in short supply.
