I've always thought Mountain Home would be a good location for certain restaurants that haven't located there yet- Olive Garden, IHOP, etc. I also think a Target would do very well there considering how excessively well their Wal-Mart does and the relatively large portion of the population that is more affluent and more likely to shop at a Target.
Mountain Home had a mall until it was bought out to be redeveloped, and if it ever takes off again, you'll have a "new" mall. I understand the Village Mall (and old Wal-Mart) were purchased by a developer to be renovated and then revived, but there's not likely to be much movement on that until the economy picks back up. It's very hard to have a successful mall in a town that size- the big mall anchor chains won't go there because it's not profitable to locate in such a small market, and the high school and family crowd that makes a mall successful won't go there without the big anchor chains. The Village Mall was never very good, but even with a Maurice's, Stage, etc. it still had very low traffic and didn't do well. My question to high school kids is always: what would you do if you had a mall? I never really understood the "I wish we had a mall" complaints of small town high schoolers when the malls in big towns are just used as a hang-out/walk-around area for high school kids. Only the mothers/families spend enough to keep the mall alive, so I'm not sure what people think they'd do at a mall in a town of 10-12,000 people that they don't already do elsewhere.

My husband's company office is in MH, we have been there many times. Several years ago, before Chili's, many of the residents were saying that Chili's would never make it because people would never pay that much for a hamburger. Well, Chili's is apparently doing a bang up business & there is frequently a wait for a table. Several people we know have built very nice homes in the area (the largest is around 12,000 sq feet...not mine, I wouldn't want to clean that). When people have that much disposable income they tend to want some services, so I think I a higher end grocery store would do well.

I want a Dunkin Donuts. Just in case I get back up there and drive 25 in the fifty. They would get me off the road when the fish weren't biting.

I live in Memphis now, but every time I go home, I wish that there were more shopping options. An Old Navy would do great (where do tourist kids buy those cheap flip flops? Old Navy), and I think a Target would go over well too.

But really, I'm just glad we got a Chinese restaurant that isn't Diamond Head.
