In the recent Times magazine, it was reported that, as of May 1, smoking will be banned in Chinese hotels, restaurants and indoor public places.

China is home to 1/3 of the world's smokers.

What foreseeable problems do you envision for a country with so many smokers? No impact on the economy?

It's one thing to ban smoking in a country with a favorable, year-round climate, allowing for outdoor eating, but with a fair portion of China having cold winters, this should be interesting to follow.

I support smoking bans, and China definitely needs it. I don't think I actually went to a nonsmoking restaurant in China, except for the Western hotel restaurants, in some cases. Their economy will probably not suffer. Hopefully people will smoke less. I think it will be hard to initiate, but I'll be interested to see the end result. Makes me want to go to China!

If they can move on to a no-smoking policy now, I presume that means that their no-spitting initiative in the 90's must have been successful. If so, I predict they will soon be non-smokers. I didn't so much mind them blowing smoke in my face, but coughing in my face was a bit annoying.

hahaha, the last time I was in China ( a few months ago) they were still spitting, as far as a non-smoking China, I would love to see this but, I don't hold out much hope as I have seen, the Chinese seem to offer Cig's as a way of being polite, and they do business with cig's and a meal all the time, it'll be hard to enforce I think, I'll let you know how this turns out as I'll be in China for the month of July this year.

In the past, people gave cigarettes as gifts and are viewed as friendly lighting others cigarettes. This culture is changing.

Still generally pretty common, especially around spring festival, or when you need to meet with a government official.

Of course, things have changed between 2011 and 2021.
Who keeps on resurrecting these old threads?

There is no right to smoke, no right to spit, no right to be poor. Forced hard labors for drug users and death penalty for drug dealers.

China wants to be the utopia that America hates.
