1 Billion people, a freer form of government than the People's Republic and Nuclear weapons. My answer is actually YES.

The superpower era is coming to an end. India is unlikely to be a superpower although that is due to the fact that the world will be multipolar in the future. They will be a regional power and will be dominant in the Indian Ocean. They have problems with all of their neighbors though and Indians are also not very popular in Southeast Asia (the Burmese and Thais despise Indians).

Until it sheds its archaic ways, India will never be a superpower.

Agreed. I think from now on there will a balance of powers. Looking like US, UK, maybe France, Brazil, India, China and Japan will all be powers but none significantly that much more of a worldpower.

If current trends continue...

It will be a matter of "when", not if...

How can Russia possibly be left out of this?

Also, what about the EU as a block. Or other large countries with large populations (like the Next 11 list).

India will likely be a superpower, but by then superpowers will not work in the same way that superpowers of the Cold War did.

The problem of India is its high birthrates;India doesnt want to follow the chinese one -child policy although said policy is one of the root cause of the fantastic chinese economic miracle since 25 years. The growthrate of Indian GDP is entirely absorbed by the growing population (1,2 billion right now). Bengladesh has the same problem (incredible 150 million population on 100.000 sqmiles, the size of Kansas!)

I like the talk so far 9 people think they will be but 26 says not. India Superpower after the Commonwealth Games of 2010 in Delhi no way 10 months after the games India has not paid back the money and it was the Worst Commonwealth Games ever they have Child Labour building the games venues. I don't want to go into detail about the 2010 Commonwealth Games on how it was bad or we will be hear until Christmas reading.

77% of Indians live in Poverty and 46% of the kids don't get enough food and there is a big civil war going on in India now and fighting with Pakistan.

I SAY NO.
