Global city - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I don't put all that much stock in the GaWC listing, but one I'm scratching my head over is Nicosia, Cyprus.
It has a metro of less than 300,000, is in a pretty obscure country - yet is apparently the richest city in the Middle East by purchasing power.
Yet it's on the same level as cities like Birmingham, Brisbane, Rio de Janeiro, Kolkata, Detroit, Denver, St. Louis, San Diego, Perth, Lagos and even Osaka? Why is Osaka so low? Surely Nicosia cannot be on the 'same level' as Osaka? I don't know how exactly they figure this out.
