As a basic summary, it states that some things are under a secular law system, and other things are on an Islamic Sharia law system. The controversy is when non-Muslims marry Muslims, and issues happen. Where is it settled? It seems by default that Muslims have more rights for being Muslim.
If you've read the article, or know much about it Malaysia in general; what are your take on things? Additionally, is this driving non-Muslims away from Malaysia?
It's driving non-Muslims out of Malaysia and preventing non-Muslims from going there. Malaysia is a wonderful country except for the Sharia law and preferences for the Muslims.

That's my take on it as well. I'm equally interested in Malaysia, and really like that country. But those are some serious issues that need to be taken on in a multicultural country.
Honestly, sounds like a typical custody battle. If they weren't using Islam as a shield, they would be using something else.
Not supporting Sharia, mind you. Can't stand it and part of the reason I always roll my eyes when people on here try to push Malaysia as some great place to live.
I know the things OP mentioned long, Brunei's laws and ethnic policies is similar to Malaysia, Indonesia is less strict on these issues, Singapore is multicultural without the religions issues with all races being equal in government policies. That's why a lot of Chinese, Indians and ethnic minorities in neigboring countries move to Singapore since Southeast Asia became indepedent from Western powers.
If Chinese and Indians are bad treated in Southeast Asian countries, it will damage the relations between them and China and India, and this had happened before. Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore currently have good relations with both China and India.
